No.10-Textual Analysis

The titles in romantic comedies tend to be simple and easy to read. Normally in romantic comedies the font used is script writing, because it relates to romance, but some films in this genre just use classic fonts. The titles slowly fade in and fade out. The titles contain the names of producers, directors and actors/actresses.

Normally in a title sequence in this genre, a song is played, diegetic or non-diegetic. For example in the title sequence of Bridget Jones Diary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0D0zfB1l1x0) the diegetic song 'all by myself' is played and she starts singing with the song. However in the Love Actually title sequence (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsnruVriVYw) there is music in the background but there is a over-powering voice-over talking over the music.

In Love Actually there are many characters in the title sequence but none of them are characters in the film. The clip is located in an airport, people are wearing casual clothes and some are wearing suits. The age ranging from young children to elderly people. The characters in the clip are all hugging each other, and showing the audience that love is everywhere.

The title sequence from Bridget Jones Diary actually introduces the main character from the location of her flat in her disorganised living room. She is slouched on the sofa, drinking, smoking and watching television. She's wearing red polka dot pyjamas, has messy hair and with very little make up on. This makes the audience focus and know that this is the main character in the rest of the film.

In the Love Actually title sequence, the location is set at a airport. Therefore most the props in the clip would be luggage trolleys, bags and suitcases. The lighting is high key, this gives the audience a clear view on what's happening.
The title sequence from Bridget Jones Diary is set in her messy living room in her flat. The lighting is very dark and has naturalistic light coming from the lit fire place. The props used in this clip are a bottle of wine, a phone, television and cigarettes.

In the title sequence Bridget Jones Diary, the enigma code is used. It is used by the way the director created the clip. She is at home alone, drinking large quantities of alcohol and smoking cigarettes. The song 'All by myself' is also played in the background. This makes the audience feel like she is sad and lonely. But we do not know what triggered this unhappiness.

Love Actually's opening sequence, contains a lot of close ups that doesn't show the location clearly. The unfocused background and crowd, with the focused people hugging in the clip, make the audience think where the location is set. This is another aspect of the enigma code. The close up of the hugging people also show the viewers how close the characters are.

In the Bridget Jones Diary title sequence, the genre is established by the song played and the actions she is doing. The lyrics of the song really relate to the main characters issue of being alone. The use of script writing slowly fading in then fading out also represents romantic comedy.

In the title sequence from Love Actually the genre is established by the way everyone is hugging and loving each other. The voice-over really calms the audience down and shows that the film is a romantic comedy.
